Body Fat Percentage Explained

Body fat percentage is the share of your total body weight that is fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, organs, and water. It answers a question BMI cannot: what is your weight made of? Two people at the same height and weight — same BMI — can look and function completely differently depending on this number.
Healthy ranges
These are broad guides for adults. Athletes in lean sports often sit at the bottom of their range or just below it.

Women carry more essential fat than men — fat that is structurally necessary for hormone production and reproductive function — so the same percentage means different things across sexes. A woman at 18% body fat is very lean; a man at 18% is average.
Dropping below essential-fat levels, as some physique competitors do briefly for a show, disrupts hormones, immune function, sleep, mood, and — in women — the menstrual cycle. Very low body fat is not a health goal.
How it is measured
Tape measure (US Navy method) — free, done at home in two minutes. Uses neck and waist circumference (plus hip for women) together with height. Typically within 3–4 percentage points of a lab scan when done carefully. Technique is everything: keep the tape level and snug but not compressing, measure at the same points and the same time of day, and take the average of two or three readings. Skinfold calipers — pinch and measure subcutaneous fat at 3 to 7 body sites, then convert with an equation. Accurate in experienced hands, unreliable in untrained ones. Very cheap.
Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) — smart scales and handheld grips send a tiny current through the body and estimate fat from the resistance. Convenient, but highly sensitive to hydration, recent food and drink, exercise, and time of day. Individual readings can swing several points; it is only useful for trends taken under identical conditions (for example, first thing every morning).
DEXA scan — a low-dose X-ray that measures fat, lean mass, and bone, and shows where the fat sits (including visceral fat). One of the most accurate practical methods, with a typical error around 1–2%. Costs money and needs a clinic visit.
Hydrostatic (underwater) weighing and air-displacement plethysmography (Bod Pod) — laboratory reference methods, very accurate, rarely accessible outside a university or sports institute.

Subcutaneous vs visceral fat
Two people at 25% body fat can carry very different health risk depending on where the fat sits:
- Subcutaneous fat — under the skin, on hips, thighs, arms, and the surface of the belly. This is most of your body fat and is relatively benign.
- Visceral fat — packed around the abdominal organs, behind the muscle wall. It is metabolically active in a bad way, releasing inflammatory signals and driving insulin resistance, and it tracks with heart disease and type 2 diabetes far more tightly than total body fat.
A large, hard, protruding belly (“apple” shape) suggests more visceral fat; fat you can pinch easily and that sits low (“pear” shape) is mostly subcutaneous. Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio are cheap proxies for visceral fat. The good news: visceral fat is usually the first fat to go when you lose weight, especially with resistance training and reduced refined carbs and alcohol.

Chasing the lowest number is not the goal — below the fitness range, hunger, mood, sleep, training performance, and (for women) menstrual regularity start to suffer.
How to track it usefully
Pick one method and stick with it. What matters for a person trying to change their body is the trend over weeks — is body fat moving the direction you want — not a single precise number from a method that has its own error bars. A drop from “34% to 33%” on a smart scale means little; a steady four-week downtrend across morning readings, alongside a shrinking waist and stable gym performance, means a lot.
Pair the estimate with two cheap, reliable checks:
- Waist circumference, measured at the navel, first thing in the morning.
- Progress photos in the same lighting and pose every 2–4 weeks.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a smart-scale reading to a DEXA number and concluding one is “wrong.” They use different models; compare each method only to itself.
- Weighing in after a big meal, a workout, or a salty dinner and reading the body-fat number as real change — it is mostly water.
- Chasing an extreme number. Below the fitness range for your sex, returns diminish and health costs rise.
The bottom line
Body fat percentage tells you what your weight is composed of, and the healthy range differs by sex (roughly 10–20% for lean men, 18–28% for lean women).
