The formulas
- Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Both were fitted to lifting data in the 1990s. They estimate the load you could handle for a single rep given that you managed a known number of reps with a lighter weight. The fewer reps in the input set, the more reliable the estimate.
Worked example
You bench press 100 kg for 5 clean reps. Epley: 100 × (1 + 5 ÷ 30) = 116.7 kg. Brzycki: 100 × 36 ÷ (37 − 5) = 112.5 kg. Call it about 115 kg. Your hypertrophy work at 70% would then be roughly 80 kg, and a heavy triple at 90% about 104 kg.

Using the percentages
Once you have a 1RM, strength programmes prescribe work as a percentage of it. Re-estimate every 4 to 8 weeks as you get stronger, and use the load table above the fold to plan a session. See progressive overload for how to add weight over time.
