BMR vs TDEE: What's the Difference?

BMR and TDEE both describe calories burned, and they get mixed up constantly — including by calculators that label one as the other. The distinction is simple once you see it, and using the wrong one is a common reason a diet is set far too aggressively.
BMR: the resting floor
Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body uses at complete rest, doing nothing but staying alive: pumping blood, breathing, running the kidneys and liver, keeping your core temperature steady, and repairing cells. Measured properly, it is taken after an overnight fast, lying still and awake, in a thermally neutral room.
It is estimated from your weight, height, age, and sex. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the modern standard and the one the BMR calculator uses:
- Men:
10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5 - Women:
10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age − 161
Crucially, nobody actually burns only their BMR in a day, because nobody lies motionless for 24 hours. BMR is a floor, not a target. Eating at your BMR would put most people in a very steep, hard-to-sustain deficit.
TDEE: the whole day
Total daily energy expenditure takes BMR and adds everything else you do:
- the energy to digest and process food (the thermic effect of food, ~10% of intake),
- deliberate exercise,
- and all incidental movement — walking, standing, fidgeting, chores, commuting.
Calculators estimate TDEE by multiplying BMR by an activity factor from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (extra active). This is the number you plan around:
- Eat at TDEE → weight holds steady.
- Eat below TDEE → weight goes down.
- Eat above TDEE → weight goes up.
A worked example
A 30-year-old man, 80 kg, 180 cm:

To lose about 0.5 kg per week, he eats around 2,259 — a 500-calorie deficit from TDEE (2,759), not from BMR (1,780). Subtracting 500 from BMR instead would put him near 1,280 calories, an unnecessarily brutal deficit that would cost muscle and be hard to hold.
Estimating BMR without a calculator
If you want a rough BMR in your head, a decent shortcut for adults is about 22 calories per kilogram of body weight (10 per pound) for women and 24 per kg (11 per pound) for men — it lands within ~10% of Mifflin-St Jeor for people of average build. For the 80 kg man above, 24 × 80 = 1,920, a little high versus the 1,780 from the full equation because the shortcut ignores that BMR per kg falls as body size rises. If you have a body-fat estimate, the Katch-McArdle equation is often more
accurate because it works from lean mass: BMR = 370 + 21.6 × lean kg. It is
the better choice for very lean or very heavy people, where height-and-weight
formulas drift.
Metabolism myths
- “Eating small meals often stokes your metabolism.” Meal frequency has a negligible effect on total daily burn; the thermic effect of food depends on how much and what you eat, not how many sittings.
- “Some people just have a slow metabolism.” True BMR differences between similar-sized people are usually small (a few percent). Large real-world differences in “how much I can eat” are mostly NEAT — incidental movement — not resting metabolism.
- “Muscle burns hundreds of extra calories at rest.” A kilogram of muscle burns only about 13 calories a day at rest, versus ~4 for fat. Building muscle helps long-term weight management, but through training energy cost, better glucose handling, and body composition — not a huge resting-burn bump.
Which to use, and when
- Use TDEE for calorie planning — maintenance, cutting, or bulking targets all start from TDEE.
- Look at BMR to understand your metabolism. It tells you how much of your burn is “fixed cost.” BMR falls with age and with loss of muscle, and rises with more lean mass — which is part of why resistance training helps with long-term weight management.
Why your BMR changes
- Muscle mass. Lean tissue is more metabolically active than fat, so building muscle raises BMR modestly and losing it lowers BMR.
- Body size. A bigger body costs more to maintain; as you lose weight, BMR drops.
- Age. BMR declines roughly 1–2% per decade in adulthood, largely tracking muscle loss.
- Hormones. Thyroid function in particular sets the pace of resting metabolism.
- Severe or prolonged dieting can suppress BMR somewhat (“adaptive thermogenesis”), which reverses when you return to maintenance.
Common mistakes
- Dieting off BMR instead of TDEE, creating a deficit twice as large as intended.
- Treating the calculated BMR or TDEE as exact. Both carry error; calibrate against real weight data over 2–3 weeks. See how TDEE works.

If a device or website gives you a single “calories” number without saying which of these it is, assume it is a BMR/RMR estimate and multiply by your activity factor before using it to plan.
The bottom line
BMR is what you burn at rest; TDEE is what you burn in a real day, including digestion, exercise, and incidental movement. Plan every calorie target from TDEE.
